Literacy Intervention Tutors for Local Schools

Hill Learning Center is seeking reading tutors to deliver high dose literacy intervention tutoring using the 95 RAP program to struggling readers in local schools, both during the school day and after school. Applicants should have a background in the science of reading, experience working with diverse student populations and a commitment to serving those farthest from opportunity.

Role:

  • Deliver high dose, intensive literacy intervention tutoring at a Title I and/or low-performing public or public charter school in Durham or Orange County to students with persistent deficits in foundational reading skills.
  • Tutor 4 days per week, Monday through Thursday, for 3-5 hours per day from early October 2024 to mid-May 2025. Most sessions are during the school day, with some opportunities for after-school tutoring in addition to or instead of during the school day program.
  • Receive training in the 95 Percent Group Reading Achievement Program (95 RAP), including 20 hours of self-paced online coursework in the methodology and research that underlies it, a one-day live webinar training, and at least three 1:1 instructional coaching sessions with a Hill coach during the first year of using the program.
  • Participate in three professional development sessions with other Hill literacy intervention tutors throughout the school year.
  • Provide student 95 RAP data to partners as needed (e.g., classroom teachers, parents, program administrators).
  • Attend project meetings with school partners as needed (meeting commitments will not exceed a few hours over the course of the year).

About 95 RAP: Hill’s Literacy Intervention Tutoring program uses 95 RAP, a small-group (4:1), individualized reading intervention supported by technology and professional development. 95 RAP guides teachers through effective instruction in foundational reading skills. The sequence and multi-sensory instruction are influenced by Orton Gillingham. A RAP lesson incorporates up to seven integrated components, all of which include short bursts of instruction. The 95 RAP app provides a clear and consistent daily structure, individualizes content, and calculates mastery of concepts, allowing the tutor to focus on providing high-quality instruction. Components include Oral Drill, Phonological Awareness, Word Attack/Phonics, Spelling, Fluency, Vocabulary, and Comprehension. Sessions move rapidly, with direct instruction fluidly integrated in between student responses, helping students maintain focus and attention while learning. Students track their goals and progress and celebrate their successes, supporting student agency and confidence.

Qualifications. Preference will be given to candidates with: 1) a Bachelor’s or Master's degree in special education or elementary education, 2) certification in related field, 3) experience working with diverse students with foundational literacy gaps or learning differences.

Hill Learning Center actively strives to create diverse, inclusive, and equitable learning environments representative of the communities we serve. We acknowledge, celebrate, and honor diversity, which has many dimensions, including learning styles, race, ethnicity, gender, religion, sexual orientation, and economic background. Candidates of color and members of other underrepresented groups who might enrich and diversify the Hill community are strongly encouraged to apply.

About Hill Learning Center’s Literacy Intervention Tutoring (LIT) Program: For over a decade, Hill has been working to further access to our intensive, research-based tutoring program by providing services on site at local schools to students who may not otherwise have access. Hill has state funding to support the LIT program at six area schools: Grady A. Brown Elementary, New Hope Elementary, A.L. Stanback Middle and Partnership Academy in Orange County Schools, and KIPP Durham and Maureen Joy Charter Schools in Durham. The programs in these schools are fully funded by the state grant. Hill works collaboratively with other local schools to identify funding sources to support the program.
